2016 Brochure Distribution Guidelines
Visitors to Nova Scotia access travel planning information through multiple channels along their path to purchase. In-destination, many visitors stop at the Visitor Information Centres across Nova Scotia to receive travel oriented information on our products and services to assist them with their vacation planning. Tourism Nova Scotia invites Nova Scotia tourism operators to participate in our complimentary travel publication distribution program to Visitor Information Centres.
Who can participate?
- Any Nova Scotian or Canadian company or tourism organization that delivers a tourism product or service in Nova Scotia.
- To qualify for the complimentary mailing service travel literature must provide information on Nova Scotia’s tourism products and services that will assist our visitors in travel planning.
Tourism Business Guidelines
- Revenue generating businesses must have a business # on file and be in good standing with the Canada Revenue Agency.
- All operations must be registered with the Nova Scotia Registry of Joint Stock Companies. Registration must be current.
- Businesses must meet all of the criteria and regulations set out in the Act under which the operation falls.
- Brochures must provide an accurate representation of the facility.
- Brochures must meet the requirements of the Human Rights Act.
- Fixed roof accommodations and campgrounds must be licensed and approved by one of the following recognized quality programs: Nova Scotia Approved, Canada Select or CAA.
Community, Regional & Independent Tourism Guides
- All accommodations in these publications must be licensed and are part of a Quality Approved Program. One unapproved accommodation may result in the guide not being displayed.
How do I participate?
- Operators are responsible for the delivery of their brochures and publications to the Dartmouth Distribution Centre (Monday – Friday: 8:30am – 4:30pm) with a completed allocation sheet (.doc) (click here for PDF version).
- Dartmouth Distribution mailing address: 10 Acadia Street, Suite 2, Dartmouth, NS B2Y 4H3.
- While distribution to the VICs is complimentary, all shipments must be pre-paid. Bus shipments will not be accepted as there is no pick-up from the bus depot.
When can I ship my brochures?
- To maximize the opportunity to have your tourism information displayed in the VICs across Nova Scotia this season, we recommend delivery by May 02, 2016.
- Brochures are shipped to the VICs once a month starting in May and ending in mid-August.
- The maximum quantity of brochures that you can ship to the Distribution Centre is 5,000, although a smaller amount is recommended to reduce your costs and the possibility of unused brochures.
- Brochures to be bundled in lots of either 50 or 100, brochures not bundled will not be accepted.
- Boxes should have the quantity and title clearly marked on the outside.
- Large guide books not sent in cartons must be bundled in equal amounts and strapped both ways.
- Due to limited storage space at many centres, operators are encouraged to limit their shipments to a maximum of 100 brochures to the community VICs.
Brochure Design & Print Tips
- Positioning the business name prominently on the top third, front of your brochure will ensure it is visible in the travel publication racks.
- Highlight the operation’s contact number, website, email and physical location.
- Include details on facilities, hours and dates of operation, detailed directions, social media tags, apps, QR codes.
- Travel brochures best handle standardized travel publication styles: folded brochure should not exceed 4” x 9” (10cm x 23 cm), brochures larger or smaller than 4” x 9” (10cm x 23 cm) will not fit in the brochure racks.
- Recommended paper stock: 80lb cover weight for two sided brochures (rack cards), 80lb text weight paper for folded brochures (e.g. tri-fold).
- 1.5 spacing of brochure text provides easy reading and high resolution (300 dpi) images is recommended for printing.
- Hand drawn locator maps and photocopied brochures will not be accepted for distribution.
- Brochures may be displayed on a rotational basis due to space restrictions at some VICs.
- Due to the seasonal operation of most VIC locations, remaining travel publications that contain dated information/events will be recycled at the end of the season.
- It is the responsibility of the operator or organization to claim unused literature at the end of the season.
