Nova Scotia Takes Two Spots on CBC The Current’s Top 10 Travel Bucket List

Tuesday, May 20, 2025

Nova Scotia took two of the ten spots on CBC The Current’s Travel Bucket List. Cape Breton Island, nominated by Sandra Trask, and the drive from Amherst to Masstown, nominated by Greer Kelley, were voted into the top 10 places to explore across Canada.

Greer Kelley reached out to Tourism Nova Scotia after her nomination secured one of the top spots. “I was quite pleased it made it into the top 10 because it is a lovely part of the province,” said Greer.

Greer grew up taking Sunday drives around Nova Scotia with her family. After spending most of her working life in British Columbia, she returned to Nova Scotia during the pandemic where she resumed her cherished tradition of Sunday drives and discovered the beautiful area along the Bay of Fundy.

She nominated the Amherst to Masstown drive for The Current’s Travel Bucket List because it is out of the ordinary and makes a perfect Sunday drive. “It has everything – no matter if you’re interested in history, hiking, biking, and exploring islands. You can learn about indigenous culture,” she says. Some of Greer’s highlights along the route include the Minas Basin, Advocate Harbour, Cape Chignecto, the Dutchman’s Cheese Farm, and Joggins Fossil Cliffs.

Since moving back to Nova Scotia, Greer has gained a reputation as a tour guide for guests she happily tours around the province, having hosted 11 sets of guests. She’s noted a significant increase in local wineries and cideries and hands guests a Good Cheer Trail passport when they visit. She also volunteers as the excursion coordinator for the St. Margaret’s Bay Seniors Association, helping seniors who no longer drive get out and explore the province.

CBC’s The Current received over 200 submissions for its Travel Bucket List. People could vote everyday, and Greer used Facebook to encourage people to vote for the Amherst to Masstown route. Her submission went on to receive an impressive 50,000 votes. Destination Cape Breton also encouraged people to vote for Cape Breton Island. These efforts paid off and will help raise awareness of exciting places to explore in Nova Scotia.
