Celebrating Mi'kmaq Heritage Month 2024

Thursday, October 3, 2024

As we celebrate Mi'kmaq Heritage Month this October, the theme is Mijipjewey Na Mawa’luksi’k (Food Gathers Us Together). Authentic Mi’kmaw culinary experiences offer travellers an opportunity to engage in Mi’kmaw culture and traditions.

Mi'kmaw cuisine is deeply rooted in the land and sea, highlighting traditional foods like fish, game, and wild edibles and cooking techniques passed down through generations. It's a celebration of sustainability and connection to nature. Many events are scheduled this month where you can learn more about Mi'kmaw culinary traditions.

A starter served at Kiju's Restaurant in Membertou Trade and Convention Centre.
Four Cent Bread Skillet at Kiju's made with traditional Mi’kmaq fry bread, artichoke parmesan dip, sweet grass molasses.
