In Nova Scotia, the African Heritage Month theme for 2023 is Seas of Struggle: African Peoples from Shore to Shore. The them recognizes "the resiliency, strength, and determination of people of African descent from the shores of Africa to the shores of Nova Scotia — with the Atlantic Ocean being the everlasting connection."
In the month of February, and all year long, the tourism industry is active in helping to share and celebrate African Nova Scotian culture, heritage and experiences. From cuisine to live music, museums to tours, there are many ways for both visitors and residents to explore African Nova Scotian heritage and contemporary Black culture.
Here are some ways you can honour African Heritage Month:
- Learn more about African Heritage Month
- Visit some of our tourism operators sharing African Nova Scotian history. You can find inspiration in this New York Times article by Shayla Martin, A Journey Through Black Nova Scotia.
- Participate in African Heritage Month events or attend the Halifax Black Film Festival
- Support Black-owned businesses listed on the Elevate and Explore Black Nova Scotia business directory
