Recreational cannabis is now legal in Canada and Tourism Nova Scotia is committed to helping our industry partners and visitors alike be in the know about rules, regulations, and health and safety risks.
Visitor Awareness, Health and Safety
Starting this fall, Tourism Nova Scotia will be displaying the Government of Nova Scotia’s cannabis health and safety information in the provincial visitor information centres, in the provincial travel guide Doers and Dreamers, and on the provincial trip planning website novascotia.com.
Nova Scotia’s Cannabis Laws
The Nova Scotia government’s cannabis awareness website novascotia.ca/cannabis is the best source of information on legal cannabis in the province. We encourage both tourism partners and visitors to learn about Nova Scotia’s laws and the health and safety risks associated with cannabis by exploring this website.

Cannabis Sale and Promotion in Nova Scotia
In accordance with the federal Cannabis Act, Tourism Nova Scotia will not be promoting cannabis experiences, services or products. The Cannabis Act has strict rules around promotion of cannabis (similar to those for tobacco). Only the Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation is authorized to sell cannabis in Nova Scotia.
Cannabis and the Tourism Industry – Your Questions Answered at the 2018 TIANS Tourism Summit
Tourism Nova Scotia and TIANS have partnered with the provincial government to offer a government-led panel about cannabis and tourism at the 2018 Tourism Summit on Tuesday, November 27. A group of representatives from several government departments will be on the panel to answer questions about the laws, workplace safety, implications for licensed premises, the Smoke-free Places Act, and more.

Nova Scotia’s tourism industry employs five per cent of Nova Scotians and welcomes over two million non-resident visitors each year. It is essential for all those involved in this growing industry to understand how the legalization of cannabis may impact business and travel in Nova Scotia. We are available to answer questions from tourism operators and visitors, but it is ultimately every business operator’s and visitor’s responsibility to understand the law where they operate or travel.
